| Objectives |

| This course is designed to provide an update in rheumatology for the generalist (family medicine, internal medicine), obstetricians/gynecologists, neurologists, orthopaedist, physiatrists and other physicians and health professionals who treat patients with rheumatological problems. Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to minimize NSAID gastropathy, to manage osteoarthritis patients effectively, to identify appropriate patients for joint aspiration, interpret synovial fluid analysis, and perform injections with corticosteroids/viscosupplementation; recognize the importance of early diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis; select the optimal new pharmacological treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, including leflunomide, etanercept, infliximab, adalimumab and kineret, abetacept and rituximab; identify the potential adverse events associated with biologic anti-rheumatic therapies; recognize the mimics of vasculitis and the rheumatic syndromes associated with neoplasia and endocrinopathies; minimize the effects of glucocorticoid induced osteoporosis; anticipate peri-operative problems in the rheumatic disease patient; and evaluate and manage effectively the patient with chronic myofascial pain/fibromyalgia applying for disability benefits. |
